Sue Dawe is a native Californian, hailing from Glendale. First inspired in art by the illustrations in the old Elson Readers that were read to her at an early age, Sue began drawing her pets and other animals, especially horses. Always interested in wildlife and animals, she initially decided to be a veterinarian rather than an artist, continuing her education at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo and graduating in 1977 with highest honors. Sue began illustrating in her spare time while working for a veterinarian in San Diego. She took some art classes at Palomar Community College, then launched into illustration as a full-time profession. In the early eighties, she attended the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. She now lives in San Diego where she shares her life with her husband Michael and Brandybuck, a Border Collie.
Sue lists her other interests as costume design, skiing, SCUBA diving, music and writing. She is a fan of science fiction in general, and has described herself as a rabid Star Wars fan. Her original art often graces convention art shows, and Sue is an enthusiastic convention attendee.
Sue is best known for her airbrush designs, but works in a variety of media. Her art intends to tell a story visually and, while fantasy is her favorite subject, it is by no means her only one. Sue's art has appeared on cards, posters, calendars, stationery, puzzles, porcelain, back-to-school supplies and, most recently, rubber stamps and magnets. |
