Westercon 77 Business Meeting Proposes Retiring Westercon

The Westercon 77 Business Meeting held at BayCon 2025 in Santa Clara, California on July 6, 2025 gave first passage to a proposal to repeal the Westercon Bylaws. Should this proposal be ratified at the Westercon 78 Business Meeting in 2026, it would have the effect of “handing in the charter” of Westercon to the owner of the Westercon service mark, the Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society (LASFS). If it is ratified, Westercons 79 and 80 would still be held, but would not conduct site selection or hold a business meeting, and Westercon 80 in 2028 would be the final Westercon under the current Bylaws. Thereafter, the disposition of Westercon would be in the hands of LASFS, which founded Westercon in 1948

The Business Meeting also received the official results of Westercon 79 Site Selection and ratified a technical amendment to the Westercon Bylaws that was initially passed at Westercon 76 in Salt Lake City in 2024.

The Meeting also created a committee chaired by Cliff Dunn to develop recommendations for “caretaker” proposals and any other actions to place before the Westercon 78 Business Meeting regarding the retirement of Westercon, such as the ongoing preservation of the Westercon.org website.

The video recording of the Business Meeting is below.
