The 2026 Westercon Business Meeting held at BayCon 42/Westercon 78 voted to ratify a motion first passed in 2025 to repeal the Westercon Bylaws, except for provisions of Article 1 applicable to seated conventions. The meeting also selected a bid from the Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society (LASFS) to hold Westercon 80 in conjunction with Loscon 54 in 2028. This means that Westercon 80 will be the final Westercon of the current series of conventions that were first held in 1948.

The 2027 and 2028 Westercons will not conduct a Site Selection election, nor will they hold Business Meetings. At the conclusion of Loscon 54/Westercon 80, the convention will be deemed to have “returned its charter” to the owner of the Westercon service mark, LASFS. Thereafter, LASFS can decide how they want to handle Westercon.

Westercon 79 will be held in conjunction with BayCon 2027 at the Santa Clara Marriott, Santa Clara, California, over the US Independence Day weekend, July 2-5, 2027.

The first three Westercons were held in Los Angeles in 1948-50, with Westercon 4 being held in San Francisco in 1951. These final two Westercons symbolically retrace the convention’s steps from the Bay Area to the Los Angeles area, and are a sort of “Retirement Tour” for the convention. Both BayCon and Loscon are expected to include programming about the history of Westercon.

Among the main reasons cited for retiring Westercon were a lack of bidders to host the convention, as well as the number of local conventions in various places in western North America that filled the same role that Westercon once held.
